FORTY FOUR

July 23, 1952

Edna let her boss yell. She knew what trauma looked like when she saw it in someone’s eyes. She knew Bazy Miller was still imagining the barrel of Bill Donovan’s revolver pointed at her head. She was screaming at Edna for making her hand over the FS-1 letter. Edna took it on the chin, knowing Bazy’s frustration was really directed at Donovan. The editor was furious at the idea that Donovan might get away with a criminal act in the name of a president she now believed to be “morally bankrupt and illegitimate”.

But Edna knew it was time to speak up when Bazy bitterly declared her determination to put the whole sordid tale on the front page of the following day’s paper. Edna closed the door to the publisher’s office then, and quietly went to great lengths to explain why that was precisely what they could not do. They had nothing to gain by writing a story about a top-secret operation when they no longer had the written evidence in their possession. It would put them in an indefensible legal mess if Truman or the Air Force came after them in the courts.

“Highly unlikely,” Bazy argued, “because that would mean admitting to the conspiracy.”

Edna conceded her boss might be right. “But what if Donovan’s right too? What if we started a war? Is that a risk worth taking? He will swat us down like flies and make it look like an accident.”

Meantime, they had another story to focus on. The sighting over Washington was big news around the world and remained a topic of intense public debate. More importantly, Edna could say with the confidence of her own firsthand observation that Truman himself had convened a secret high-level meeting on the matter, illustrating the extent of concern within government circles. She assured Bazy they weren’t done on the FS-1 project, just that it now required a more thorough investigation. This wasn’t something regularly undertaken by Times-Herald reporters; it needed careful consideration. Life magazine had spent a year researching their saucer story.

None of this was welcome news to Bazy Miller, but she eventually agreed it was the best way forward.

That afternoon, Edna went to work on a front-page flying saucer exclusive. It felt like her first genuine foray into investigative reporting.
